Beyond typos: what a grammar check should catch

A grammar check is more than a spellchecker. Spelling is the easy part; the errors that make writing look careless usually hide in agreement, punctuation and sentence structure, the things a quick read misses because your brain helpfully fills in what you meant to write rather than what is actually on the page.

Three layers a good check covers

  • Mechanics, spelling, spacing, capitalisation, and stray or doubled punctuation.
  • Grammar, subject-verb agreement, verb tense, articles (a/an/the), and pronouns.
  • Structure, run-on sentences, comma splices, and sentences that lost their way.

The errors readers notice most

A handful of mistakes stand out disproportionately: mixing up its/it's, your/you're and their/there/they're; pairing a singular subject with a plural verb; and run-on sentences that should have been split in two. Fixing these does more for how your writing is perceived than any amount of fancy vocabulary.

Correct, but do not over-correct

A grammar fix should repair what is wrong and leave your voice alone. Be wary of changes that make a sentence technically correct but stiff or unnatural, correctness and readability are not the same thing. When in doubt, keep the version a real person would actually say out loud.

When to double-check yourself

Automated checks are excellent on mechanics and common grammar, but they can miss meaning-level issues, a correctly spelled wrong word, or a sentence that is grammatical yet ambiguous. For anything important, read it once more yourself (ideally aloud) after the fix. The tool handles the obvious; you catch the subtle.
